Shade Sails Raglan

Raglan is the toughest place in the Waikato to hang fabric outdoors — salt air, onshore westerlies and hard summer sun. We design sails specifically for it.

Shade sails that take the west coast seriously

Anything installed outdoors in Raglan gets tested. The onshore westerlies work fixings loose, salt spray finds every cheap component, and the summer sun over the harbour is as hard as anywhere in the region. A shade sail that would live a quiet life in a Hamilton cul-de-sac needs a different standard of design and hardware out here — and that's the standard we build to.

Our sails are made to measure in our Pirongia workshop from knitted Monotec HDPE mesh — a high-strength lockstitch-knitted fabric that lets wind pass through rather than loading the structure like a solid sheet. Corners are reinforced, and our wire-edge construction uses marine grade stainless steel components with an adjustable perimeter cable, which is exactly what a coastal site wants: strength, adjustability and hardware that shrugs off salt.

  • Marine grade stainless steel fittings on wire-edge sails
  • Knitted mesh breathes, so wind moves through instead of hammering it
  • Tension, post and anchor design worked out on site, for your site

Designing for salt, wind and glare

Raglan properties come with exposure baked in. Whether it's a bach near the harbour, a home up on the hill catching the full afternoon westerly, or a deck that cops both sun and spray, the design conversation starts with the conditions: which way the weather arrives, what the anchor points can honestly carry, and how much tension the sail needs to stay quiet in a blow.

Salt is the other constant. Coastal air corrodes standard fixings long before the fabric gives up, which is why component quality matters more in Raglan than anywhere else we work. Reinforced corners and marine grade stainless steel hardware are how a sail keeps its shape — and its safety margin — season after season out here.

The sun does its share too. Monotec mesh offers up to 97% shade and was developed specifically for sun protection and longevity, so the sail keeps doing its job through the years of hard coastal UV rather than fading and slackening after a couple of summers.

Waikato made, coast ready

Why exposed sites need a properly engineered sail

Wind is the design brief

On the west coast we design for the westerly first — sail shape, post strength, anchor points and tension are all worked out around how the wind arrives at your site.

Hardware that beats salt

Wire-edge sails run marine grade stainless steel components and reinforced corners, so the parts under load are the parts built for a coastal environment.

Made here, not shipped in

Every sail is manufactured in our Pirongia workshop and installed by the same team, so what goes up in Raglan was designed for Raglan — not pulled from a warehouse shelf.

Shade Sails in Raglanquestions

Can a shade sail really handle Raglan's wind?

Yes — if it's designed for it. Knitted Monotec mesh lets air pass through rather than catching it like a solid sheet, and we design the tension, post sizing and anchor points around your site's exposure. A loose, under-engineered sail is what gives shade sails a bad name in windy spots; a properly tensioned one is a different thing entirely.

Won't the salt air corrode the fittings?

It will corrode cheap fittings, which is why we don't use them. Our wire-edge sails use marine grade stainless steel components with reinforced corners — hardware made for exactly this environment. It's the difference between a sail that lasts on the coast and one that fails at the fixings.

Do you travel out to Raglan for quotes?

We do. Our workshop is in Pirongia and Raglan is comfortably inside our patch — we come out, measure the space, look at how the weather hits your site and give you a fixed, no-obligation quote.

What about rain cover for the shoulder seasons?

If you want the space usable when it's wet as well as when it's hot, a waterproof PVC sail is the answer — it keeps rain off and is built on heavier structures with marine grade stainless steel and heavy-duty galvanised poles. We make both types and will recommend whichever genuinely suits how you use the area.
