Retractable Shade Options in NZ

Motorised awnings, wave shade canopies, drop-arm screens — what each one does, and how to pick the right retractable shade for your space.

Retractable shade in New Zealand comes in three main forms: folding-arm awnings that extend out over a deck or patio and fold away against the house, wave shades — retractable canopies that run on walls, pergolas or poles — and vertical retractable screens such as drop-arm awnings and track-guided outdoor blinds. Each solves a different problem, and the right choice comes down to what you’re shading.

Here’s how the options compare — including the honest case for when a fixed shade sail beats anything retractable.

Folding-arm awnings — motorised overhead shade

The classic retractable awning — and what most people mean by an electric awning. Folding arms carry the fabric out over your deck or patio, then fold it back flat against the house when you want the sun. No posts, no permanent structure in the garden.

Our Horizon folding-arm awnings are custom made with high quality components and European technology and styling — operated by gearbox with handle, or motorised at the press of a button, with an optional wind or motion sensor that retracts the awning automatically in windy conditions. They carry a 5 year warranty and have been tested in winds up to 90km/h with no visible damage.

Best for: decks and patios off the house — big overhead shade in summer, full sun in winter.

Wave shades — retractable canopies & sails

If you’re searching for a retractable pergola roof or retractable shade sail, this is usually the answer. A wave shade is a custom-designed retractable canopy that attaches to walls, pergolas or poles — gliding out to cover the space and gathering back in soft waves when you want open sky. Made from premium materials in various styles and colours, it’s the ultimate in customised shade.

Because each system is designed around your structure, wave shades suit spaces a standard awning can’t reach — under an existing pergola, between a wall and poles, or across a courtyard. We handle the full system design and professional installation throughout Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Cambridge.

Best for: pergolas that need a retractable roof, and entertaining areas where you want shade that performs a little differently from a traditional sail.

Drop-arm awnings & track-guided screens — retractable vertical shade

Not all retractable shade goes overhead. Vertigo drop-arm awnings lower over the glass — a great solution for window shading and interior privacy, with sunscreen mesh for natural filtered light or acrylic canvas for a private finish. They stop hot sun before it hits the window, protecting carpet and furniture from UV.

For closing in an outdoor room, Ziptrak track-guided blinds are the retractable option: a spring-loaded blind that glides within side tracks, stops at any height, and locks in the down position — no zips, ropes or buckles. Choose mesh for sun and airflow, or clear PVC to keep wind and rain out year-round, with manual or motorised operation.

Best for: hot west-facing windows, privacy from the neighbours, and turning a covered patio into a usable winter room.

When a fixed shade sail beats retractable

Retractable isn’t automatically better. A custom tensioned shade sail in a commercial-grade knitted fabric like Monotec — up to 97% shade, 13 year fabric warranty — is engineered to stay up through wind, rain and high summer without any input from you. For pools, playgrounds, schools and big spans that need protection every day, set-and-forget usually wins.

The rule of thumb: choose retractable when you genuinely want the sun back for part of the year, and fixed when the area needs protection whenever it’s in use.

So which should you pick?

Shading a deck or patio straight off the house? A motorised folding-arm awning is the cleanest answer. Already have a pergola, or an awkward space between walls and poles? A wave shade retractable canopy. Hot windows or an outdoor room to close in? Drop-arm awnings and Ziptrak track-guided blinds. An area that needs shade all season, every day — pool, playground, north-facing courtyard? A fixed, tensioned shade sail.

Retractable shade questions

Can retractable awnings be motorised in NZ?

Yes — folding-arm awnings are easily operated by gearbox with handle or automated with the press of a button. When automated, a wind or motion sensor can be added so the awning retracts itself in windy conditions. Track-guided outdoor blinds are also available with manual or motorised operation.

What happens to a retractable awning in strong wind?

Horizon awnings have been tested in winds up to 90km/h with no visible damage — but the point of retractable shade is that it comes in when the weather turns. On motorised awnings, a wind or motion sensor retracts the awning automatically, so you don't have to be home to protect it.

What is the difference between a retractable pergola canopy and a wave shade?

They're closely related. A wave shade is a retractable canopy that runs beneath or between a structure — it can attach to walls, pergolas or poles — and gathers back in soft waves when open. If you already have a pergola frame, a wave shade is usually the simplest way to make its roof retractable.

How much does retractable shade cost in New Zealand?

It depends on the system, the size of the area and how the shade fixes to your home, so we don't quote from a price list. We visit, measure the space, recommend the right system and give you a fixed, no-obligation quote — the measure and quote are free.
